Arbuckle Latin Decliner contains the endings for all five declensions. It can decline in all 6 cases (Nominative, Genitive, Dative, Accusative, Vocative, and Ablative). It is also able to decline in the singular and plural voices for any noun entered. What sets Arbuckle Latin Decliner apart is the translations. Every Latin decliner available just declines the noun. To really understand Latin, you must also see the translation. This program has full translations for all noun forms. The system takes into account the case, number, and meaning entered to provide the only translation capability available in Latin inflection software.
7. NAVIGATION
Arbuckle Latin Decliner is divided into two parts, the Launcher and the Declension window.
The Launcher has four columns. On the left, there are five buttons. They correspond to the five declensions. You may open each declension window by clicking the buttons. The interface of the declension window is discussed below.
On the right of the launcher is the Tell Me feature. If you don’t know what declension your verb is, just enter the Genitive Singular and click Tell Me. A message box will tell you the declension, and then open that declension window.
The third column is the Translate feature. Click Launch Translator.
The SPQR column contains all other features. To view a simple version of the Launcher instructions, you may click the Help button. To view information about Arbuckle Latin Decliner, you may click the About button. If you found a problem in the program, please report it at http://arbucklesoftware.weebly.com.
The Five Declension windows are divided into two sections as described below:
The SPQR Section contains the controls for noun entry, the Help button, Launcher button, and the About button. Enter the Genitive Singular and meaning of a noun as described in the program and click SPQR to decline it. For the 3rd Declension, you must enter the gender of your noun because of irregularities. Your dictionary should show the gender as Masculine, Feminine, or Neuter.
You may change the noun at any time, as many times as you want as long as you click SPQR after each change.
To view a simple version of the instructions, you may click the Help button from the left panel in one of the program’s declension windows. To view information about the program, you may click the About button. To go back to the launcher to use its features, click Launcher.
The Noun Forms Section contains the specific noun forms available. It is divided into two columns: Singular and Plural. Down the left side, the cases are listed. Total, there are 12 noun forms that you can see (Singular and Plural for all 6 cases). Simply find the column in question, Singular or Plural, and then find the row in question, the case. Then click that button. A message box will be displayed containing the noun form and translation. The message box is discussed below.
Message Boxes display the noun form and translation. A box looks like this:
[Name of Noun form]: [Translation of noun form]-[Specific noun form]
Without the brackets
The translation of a noun form is English for the specific noun form taking into account the case and number, as well as the English word in use as best as the program can understand.
The specific word form is the Latin root and the specific ending taking into account the case and number for that declension.
Occasionally, the program does not know if the noun the user has entered is irregular. For less than 10 Latin nouns, it will display a message warning the user that the specific noun form requested might be different for the noun entered. Usually, it will specify how the form is different, but it might ask the user for help with the specific noun form with a series of message boxes asking for information about the noun.
