6. CONTENT AND FEATURES
Arbuckle Latin Conjugator contains the endings for all verb forms in all four conjugations. It can conjugate in all 6 tenses (Present, Imperfect, Future, Perfect, Pluperfect, and Future Perfect). It is also able to conjugate in the active and passive voices and in the indicative, imperative, and subjunctive moods as well as other verb forms. What sets Arbuckle Latin Conjugator apart is the translations. Every Latin conjugator available just conjugates the verb. To really understand Latin, you must also see the translation. This program has full translations for active and passive in all six tenses. The system takes into account the voice, tense, person, number, and meaning entered to provide the only translation capability available in software.
7. NAVIGATION
Arbuckle Latin Conjugator is divided into two parts, the Launcher and the Conjugation window.
The Launcher has five features. On the left, there are six buttons. They correspond to the four conjugations. The 3rd conjugation is divided into regular (E) and I stem (io) for clarity. The fifth button is for irregular verbs. You may open each conjugation window by clicking the buttons. The interface of the conjugation window is discussed below.
On the right of the launcher is the Tell Me feature. If you don’t know what conjugation your verb is, just enter the principal parts and click Tell Me. A message box will tell you the conjugation, and then open that conjugation window. If you enter an irregular verb (ex. Sum, esse, fui, futurus) , you will be prompted that the verb is irregular.
The third column is the Translate feature. Click Launch Translator. This is simply an easy, unified path to Google’s Latin Translator. (I can’t compete with Google, so I won’t even try a translator.)
Below the Translate feature is the Principal parts Generator. Click Get Principal parts and enter the 1st Person Singular, Present Active Indicative and the gender, and then click Get Principal parts to generate the four principal parts. This works for regular pattern-following verbs and is probably the weakest link in the program.
The SPQR column contains all the other features. To view a simple version of the Launcher instructions, you may click the Help button. To view information about Arbuckle Latin Conjugator, you may click the About button.
The Five Conjugation windows are divided into three columns as described below:
The SPQR Column contains the controls for verb entry, the Help button, Launcher or Other button, and the About button. Enter the principal parts and meaning of a verb as described in the program and click SPQR to conjugate it. The principal parts are as follows: 1st (1st person singular present active indicative), 2nd (Present active infinitive), 3rd (1st person singular perfect active indicative), and 4th (Perfect passive participle). Once these are entered, click SPQR. Now the program can conjugate the verb every way. Note that the 4th principal part (Perfect passive participle) must be entered as Masculine or –us. If it is entered as Feminine (-a) or Neuter (-um), the program will prompt you to change it. Entering the Neuter or Feminine can cause major errors in several verb forms.
The program has many “safety features” designed to minimize conjugation errors by notifying the user to change problems or provide more information. If your verb has been conjugated correctly and completely, a message box will be displayed.
You may change the principal parts at any time, as many times as you want as long as you click SPQR after each change.
The three blue links at the top of the screen take you to the Indicative, Subjunctive, and Other views.
To view a simple version of the instructions, you may click the Help button from the left panel in one of the program’s conjugation windows. To view information about the program, you may click the About button. To go back to the launcher to use its features, click Launcher. The 3rd Conjugation windows have buttons to go to the other 3rd Conjugation, and the launcher is left in the background.
The Active Column contains the conjugation features for the active voice. The six tenses of a verb are listed from top to bottom on the left side. Each tense is divided into six parts: the first (1), second (2), and third (3) person in both singular (S) and plural (P). To see the specific verb form for the verb, simply click one of the rectangular buttons. The button for 1st person singular, for example, is in the column marked S for singular and in the row marked 1 for 1st person. The message box that appears will be discussed in Message Boxes below.
The Passive Column contains the conjugation features for the passive voice.
Message Boxes display the verb form and translation. A box looks like this:
[Name of verb form]: [Translation of verb form]-[Specific verb form]
Without the brackets
The Name of a verb form is the actual name of the specific verb form you are requesting. For example: 1st person singular, present, active, indicative.
The translation of a verb form is English for the specific verb form taking into account the voice, tense, person, and number, as well as the English word in use as best as the program can understand.
The specific word form is the Latin root and the specific ending taking into account the voice, tense, person, and number.
The Active and Passive columns change to accommodate other verb forms when you wish to view the Other view.
